Bespoke Joinery from Start to Finish.

The Journey of Manufacturing a Reception Desk at Pace Interiors.

When it comes to creating bespoke joinery for our interior fit-outs, the journey from raw materials to a finished product takes knowledge and planning. At Pace Interiors, we take pride in delivering the highest quality in our manufacturing to ensure every detail is perfect for our clients. Here’s an inside look at how we manufactured a bespoke reception desk for one of our projects, from start to finish.

Machining Fluted Panels

Our journey began in the machine shop, where precision was crucial. Our machinist, Chris, cut the fluted panels that were fixed to the front of the reception desk. This process started with creating a test section to ensure that the cuts were precise, resulting in a seamless and flush finish. The fluted design required careful attention to detail to achieve a seamless finish.

Our Joiner Created Cutting Templates

In our joinery workshop, Thomas started by creating a cutting template to cut each piece for the carcass. These templates served as the blueprint for cutting the materials, ensuring consistency and accuracy throughout the process. Each piece was measured and marked, ready for the next stage of the journey.

Cutting Materials and Routing Cable Access

With the materials measured and marked, the materials were cut to size. This stage also involved cutting and routing access for cables and services to ensure that the desk was both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Every cut was made with the final assembly in mind, guaranteeing a perfect fit for all components.

Routing the gaps for electrical connections

Assembling the Carcass

Next, the carcass of the reception desk was assembled. This main structure needed to be sturdy enough to support the fluted panels and worktop. Thomas carefully fitted each piece, ensuring every joint was secure and perfectly aligned.

Fitting Removable Panels to the Carcass

To guarantee a flawless finish, Thomas temporarily fitted the removable panels onto the carcass. This step allowed him to check that they sat flush against the frame, without any gaps or misalignments. Adjustments were made as necessary, maintaining the high standards of craftsmanship we upheld.

Fixing the Fluted Panels to the Front

The fluted panels were then fixed to the front of the desk. This stage required making small adjustments to ensure that the fluting came to a precise point on each edge, creating a continuous and seamless finish. The panels were secured in place, ready for the final refinements.

Refining and Sanding the Fluted Panels

Once attached, the fluted panels underwent a refining and sanding process. This phase was essential to smooth out any imperfections and prepare the surface for finishing. The careful sanding ensured that the texture and appearance of the fluting were perfect.

Applying the Sustainable Finish

Our commitment to sustainability extended to the finishes we used. In our spray shop, the fluted front of the reception desk received a water-based lacquer finish. This not only enhanced the natural beauty of the wood but also provided a durable and protective layer. The water-based lacquer provided a more environmentally friendly alternative to solvent-based lacquers, delivering a high-quality finish while minimising the use of harmful chemicals in our manufacturing process. By choosing this lacquer, we ensured that our joinery installations contributed to a healthier environment. The materials and finishes we used helped improve indoor air quality by significantly reducing VOC emissions.

Preparing for Delivery

With the desk fully assembled and finished, it was then disassembled for wrapping and delivery. Each piece was carefully packaged to prevent damage during transit, ensuring it would arrive on site in pristine condition and ready for installation.

Installation

The final stage of the journey was the installation; our skilled team installed the desk on-site, ensuring that every piece fitted together as perfectly as it had in the workshop. The result was a stunning reception desk, ready to make a lasting impression.

From the initial machining of the fluted panels to the final installation, each step of the process was handled with care and precision. At Pace Interiors, we remained dedicated to creating bespoke joinery and interiors that combined functionality, beauty, and sustainability. This reception desk stood as a great example of our team’s work and our commitment to excellence in craftsmanship.
